Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for over 20 years. She's also a seasoned public speaker. Feminist Frequency hosts videos, commentary and analyses of the way in which popular culture portrays women. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which examines female representations in the popular media narratives. In her efforts to dispel the myths of women that have been portrayed in popular culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to harassment targeted at women and other marginalized classes of the Internet world. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Alongside being a popular public speaker, she's given speeches at the TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was interested in feminist issues, gender and gender equality from a very young time. In 2009, while still studying at university she started her Feminist Frequency web site. She had a plan to launch an internet program that would examine the gender roles in games however, she was also the subject of an online harassment campaign. The woman was not stopped by the harassment, in fact it only reinforced her drive to become a media critic and feminist. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards to recognize her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency, an educational non-profit that examines the way women are depicted in popular culture narratives.
